Why the savvy have a mentor, and why it just might be the way forward for you
by James Davey
Sales Masters Guild Mentor, James Davey, looks at why some business owners have a mentor and why it might be a way forward for those that don’t
As an experienced business mentor, I know that getting the right sort of help can quickly kick-start your business growth journey.
Not everybody wants or can afford one-to-one personal business support. Firstly, it can be very costly and secondly it doesn’t suit everyone’s preferred learning style.
A great alternative is to join a mentored peer group where you can get the benefit of the knowledge, support of a professional business mentor and the encouragement of your fellow entrepreneurial members, who like you are on a personal mission to grow a business that affords you an exceptional work-life balance.
Although I dedicate a large part of my life to engaging with and running my monthly peer mentoring groups and the one-to-one support I give my members between sessions; I also run a successful health and fitness business which is a constant reminder of the challenges and how it feels to run a substantial business on the front line, dodging the muck and bullets of modern business life, while giving me an insight into what makes people transform their lives.
Many of our health club members are happy doing their own thing in the gym, working at their own pace and relying on their own ‘self-discipline’ to make sure they visit the gym on a regular basis and work through their ‘chosen’ exercise schedule.
The thing is life all too often gets in the way and from many year’s experience of running a gym I can tell you that most people running this strategy simply never lose the weight they want to or achieve the long term fitness and healthy body they desire.
The people who ‘DO’ make rapid progress are the ones that either work with a personal trainer or join regular exercise classes benefiting from the experience and know-how of the trainer in either the one-to-one or group setting.
They are more ambitious in their goal setting, more tenacious in their application and learn new techniques from their trainer giving them quicker and better results.
Let’s face it, working out can be hard work and we all find it difficult to break through the pain barrier relying on our own willpower and determination alone. With your trainer by your side or working with others in a group class gives you that extra strength when self-doubt and a lack of staying power kicks in.
The tactics and strategies that work for your personal fitness are very similar to those that work for your business fitness too.
I see this over and over again in the monthly half-day peer group meetings that I run, where business owners are nudged to stay on track and push both their boundaries and their business’s forward each and every month.
As a member of a high-performance mentoring group you can rely on your mentor and peers to hold you to account and support you when it’s challenging so that you never feel you are alone on your journey, as they share with you their knowledge and experience to give you the confidence to try new tactics and strategies to move you forward towards your goals.
Many people worry that they can’t afford this type of help. But just like their health how many ever think about what it’s really costing them by not getting help? How many years are they shortening their lives by and how much business are they leaving on the table? What opportunities are they missing by burying their heads in the sand?
I’m not saying joining a mentored peer group is the right solution for everyone, it’s certainly never going to work unless you have an open mind to accepting help and adapting to having a learning mind-set that is capable of seeing change as an adventure rather than something that is uncomfortable.
It’s also important that you and your mentor are a great fit and can quickly get comfortable working with each other. If the relationship’s not right, you are better finding someone else to work with, someone that you feel and know will allways have the answer or connections to help you overcome any challenge in business.
Remember, if you want to transform your business, it’s the same as transforming your health and fitness – it requires commitment from you, some hard work and the help of an experienced person to guide you through the process.
